The Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority is investigating the possibility of storing desalinated water underground.
At the moment, the emirate only has two or three days’ water storage capacity. Injecting surplus water into the aquifer would protect the country against red tides, and opens up the possibility of using off-peak power supply to produce water for storage. It is an idea which could change the way the Gulf manages both water and electricity.
