The aggressive acquisition strategy pursued by Aqua America eased off last year, with only nine deals reaching completion. It does not seem to have affected the company’s share price.
Aqua America strove to become the biggest investor-owned water company in the US through a tireless campaign of acquisitions, which brought its customer base from 245,000 in 1992 to 950,000 today. The pace slipped dramatically last year, however, with only nine systems being bought, against tallies of 27-30 deals completed each year from 2004 to 2007.
