* China celebrated its mastery of the elements this month when a squadron of aeroplanes accompanied by ground-based rocket launchers sprayed enough silver iodide on the clouds to help start a snowstorm.
The cloud-seeding efforts of the modestly named “Beijing Weather Modification Command Centre” helped end a 110-day drought (see story p32). It brought immediate relief to farmers, but the long dry winter raises questions about future water availability. Winter rain (or snowfall) is important for replenishing aquifers.
