More free water for Johannesburg’s indigents

Residents of Johannesburg have successfully challenged the city’s water policy. The ruling could have national implications in terms of South Africa’s ‘right to water’.

In March, the Supreme Court of Appeal in South Africa ordered Johannesburg Water to increase its allowance of “free basic water” (FBW) from 25 litres per person per day (l/p/d) to 42 l/p/d for indigent residents, following a case brought by residents of Soweto.
