Libya outlines desal expansion plan

The Libyan government’s ambitious procurement programme envisages an exponential rise in desalination capacity over the next six years.

Libya's Committee for Public Utilities has commenced feasibility studies to build 10 large-scale seawater desalination plants in several coastal cities by 2015.

Projects deemed feasible will be tendered by the General Desalination Company, and plans have already been outlined for flagship projects in Tripoli (500,000m3/d) and Benghazi (400,000m3/d) (see GWI, July 2009, p20).
