Italy’s leakage embarrassment

New water loss figures from Italy illustrate how little investment has been made in the last 10 years. The south is guiltier than the north.
Figures released by Italy’s national statistics office reveal a shocking level of water losses, especially in the drier south of the country. According to ISTAT’s water resources census, total water losses amounted to 65% of the water fed into the network in 2008. This includes an average leakage figure of 47%, peaking at 87% in Puglia.
