Urumqi, March 1989. By a stroke of sheer good fortune, I arrived in China’s Xinjiang Province (the ‘New Dominions’ of the far North West) a few days after many of the major towns were opened for the first time to foreign travellers.
Celebrating my good fortune with like-minded Japanese students over beer and kebabs in a Uighur cafe, I was struck by the sheer quality and detail of the maps they had brought with them. I was new to the world of water, but I realised they wished to appraise these new worlds sooner and better than we thought possible.
