* Spanish water utilities will have to double tariffs over the next five years in order to meet the challenges ahead, according to the Spanish Association of Water Supply and Treatment Companies (see story p16).
According to one estimate, cost recovery in the water sector is only 30%, and with EU funding falling steeply over the next few years, there are few alternatives but higher tariffs. To give an indication of the scale of the challenge, one Galician utility reports revenues of just €660,000 per year, but has a €140 million investment programme underway ...
