* On 26 March, the Italian Senate gave the final go-ahead to a law abolishing optimum territorial areas (ATOs) in charge of water and wastewater services

Under the new law, regional authorities must decide by April 2011 who will replace the current ATOs, which are mostly under the control of provincial authorities. Sector experts have warned that services may suffer as a result of the uncertainties introduced by the new rules.
