Before Poseidon Resources, the Californian private water company everyone loved to hate was Nasdaq-quoted Cadiz Inc.
During the 1990s, the company developed a proposal to store excess water from the Colorado River beneath its land during wet years, then pump it back into the Colorado River Aqueduct in dry years.
