Raising consumer water tariffs is still a no-no in the Middle East. Tom Scotney says upping wastewater charges might be an easier case to make.
Earlier this month, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai, announced families in the emirate would see their free water quota double to 20,000 gallons a month (91 m3). “Water and electricity are national assets which have to be protected from wasting and therefore preserved for future generations,” the Sheikh said in an accompanying statement.
