GERMAN AUSTERITY

The German federal cartel office has decided that austerity should start at home, and has handed the cash-strapped citystate of Berlin a lifeline in its bid to buy back RWE’s 24.95% stake in Berliner Wasserbetriebe (BWB).

It has mandated a 19% cut in drinking water tariffs – to be implemented over three years – which if upheld would inevitably reduce the value of the stake to a more affordable level. BWB’s shareholders have few options to tighten their belts other than to trim profit margins (see story p14).
