Spain’s private water operators will be licking their lips over the chance to invest in previously forbidden territories, as metropolitan authorities look to ease their debt burden by selling or leasing prize water assets.
Top targets for privatisation include utilities in Madrid, Barcelona, Seville and Malaga (see story p12).
Meanwhile, the new govenment in Spain is likely to re-jig the way contracts are tendered by transferring responsibility from public sector bodies such as Acuamed to the Ministerio de Fomento, which already oversees transport infrastructure. The move would be a mixed blessing for the water ...
