RIO DE JANEIRO state governor Anthony Garrotinho signed R$118.3 million (US$58 million) worth of contracts for work on the Barra da Tijuca outfall project last month. Brazilian companies won all three contracts.

Construction group OAS will build a 2800m3/day WwTP having bid R$42.8 million (US$21 million). The Nova Barra consortium of Brazilian civil engineering company Odebrecht and Grupo Carioca Engenharia will build the 8km outfall, worth R$37.3 million (US$18.3 million). The pipeline will be made of flexible HDPE and will be laid on the seabed to counter the effects of long-shore drift which has damaged another outfall at nearby Leblon.

The Ivai-Sanesc-Banenge consortium will lay 286km of sewage pipelines serving 60,000 homes and build 11 pumping stations in the Baixada de Jacarepagua district. The group bid R$38.2 million (US$18.7 million) for the work.

The whole project is expected to benefit 160,000 residents in the Barra da Tijuca beach suburb and 477,000 in Baixada de Jacarepagua. Work is to start in March and last 24 months. The project is funded by the Rio de Janeiro state government which has assumed full responsibility rather than offer the work as a concession as originally planned (see GWI, Vol. 1, Issue 7, p.7).
