Desal costs on the decline

THE COST OF DESALINATED WATER IS LIKELY TO FALL as more desalination plants become operational and energy, capital and maintenance costs decrease, according to Dr Pinhas Glickstern, a consultant at Mekorot Water Company.

Glickstern says that a price of $0.50/m3 of desalinated water is not an unrealistic target. Last year the V.I.D. consortium won a tender to build a plant at Ashkelon to desalinate seawater at a cost of $0.53/m3, the lowest cost ever submitted for desalinating seawater.
