Construction starts at Ras Laffan

CROWN PRINCE SHEIKH JASSEM BIN HAMAD AL-THANI laid the foundation stone of the Ras Laffan water and power project in a ceremony in the Gulf emirate last month. Ras Laffan is one of the largest projects in the region, with a total cost of $718.4 million and a capacity of 750MW of electricity and 40MIGD of desalinated water.
The plant will provide electricity and water to industrial sites in Ras Laffan, with any surpluses forwarded to Doha and other parts of the country. The US group, AES Corporation is the majority shareholder in the Ras Laffan project with a 55% stake. The EPC contract has been awarded to Italy’s Enelpower and Fisia Italimpianti.
