Vivendi rumours continue to circulate

Rumours continued to circulate at the start of this month about the future of Vivendi Environnement (VE). In a somewhat surprising move, the Vivendi Universal board of directors gave chief executive Jean-Marie Messier permission to cut the company’s stake in the French water and environment group.
Several reports indicated that Vivendi Universal may sell as much as 20%, reducing the company’s stake in VE to around 40%. Such a move had been thought unlikely following pressure from the French president, Jacques Chirac, to retain majority French ownership of the company (see GWI, Vol. 3, Issue 5, p.16).
