Privatisation in Brazil

Basic sanitation is one of the last major sectors to remain mostly in public hands following Brazil’s extensive 10-year programme to privatise its state assets (see main text).

Thames Water, Vivendi, Ondeo, Iberdrola, Berliner Wasser, Dragados and the now defunct Azurix, could all therefore be forgiven for their expectation that the sale of water company assets would proceed in the late 1990s.
