Biwater plans legal action in South Africa

THE GREATER NELSPRUIT UTILITY COMPANY (GNUC) has finally run out of patience and announced that it intends to resort to legal action to recover unpaid bills.

The GNUC consortium, comprising the UK’s Biwater and black empowerment company Sivukile Holdings, was awarded a 30-year concession by the South African government to run water and wastewater services in the Nelspruit area of Mpumalanga province in 1999, but has found itself on the frontline of the country’s privatisation struggle.
