New water policy moots PSP in India

India’s new national water policy has called for private sector participation, “in specific situations”, for building, owning, leasing and transfer of water resources. However, while foreign private water companies are likely to regard this as a step in the right direction, they are unlikely to be falling over themselves to catch the next flight to the subcontinent.

“PSP should be encouraged in planning, development and management of water resources projects for diverse uses, wherever feasible”, the policy document states. It goes on to say that private sector involvement would help by introducing innovative ideas, generating finance, starting corporate management of water resources, and improving service efficiency and accountability to end users.
