RWE plays down expected profit plunge

But owns up to some hefty goodwill charges.

Germany multi-utility group RWE ended 2002 with a warning that net profits would fall and debts rise this year.

In a surprise move, the company decided to bring forward a statement planned for March about expected business developments in 2003. The move followed press reports warning of a dramatic fall in profits this year.
