EBRD breaks into equity

Multilateral lenders are having to innovate to attract interest in emerging markets. The EBRD has taken an audacious step.

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development has taken an historic decision to make equity investments in addition to its traditional lending activities, in order to attract private sector sponsors to central and east European water projects. The move is in response to the concerns of international private water companies about
capital exposure in emerging markets.
