Spanish government drops water charge

Pressure from farmers means that Spain probably won’t comply with the Water Framework Directive, but it still wants the EU’s money for desalination.

Spain’s socialist government last month backtracked in the face of pressure from the powerful horticultural lobby and postponed until 2009 the introduction of a water charge aimed at increasing efficiency in water use in line with principles contained in EU legislation.
