The River Po is no stranger to controversy. When the sheer ooze of human waste it carried caused algal blooms to clog the Adriatic’s beaches some 15 years ago, the authorities suggested building swimming pools rather than sewage works. European wastewater standards subsequently meant that the Po no longer has to smell the way it sounds.
