World’s first wastewater auction gets going

Prescott Valley hopes to raise $50 million from selling the groundwater credits associated with returning 9,205<sup>m3</sup>/d of treated wastewater to the aquifer. How many millions are being flushed away by other towns in the south-west?

The winners of the auction, which is expected to raise up to $50 million, will be given a matching allocation of fresh water to enable them to develop property in the region. Like most other towns in the arid south-west, Prescott Valley will not permit new property development unless it brings with it an assured water supply.
