Selling off the corporation’s main power and water plants will be painful, but with shortages reaching crisis point in Jeddah, this is not the time to break up the region’s most experienced desalination business.

The Saline Water Conversion Corporation may be broken up as part of the Saudi government’s privatisation programme, but a public sector body owning desalination plants, building new ones and maintaining a research centre looks set to remain a fixture of the Saudi water sector.
