The market for energy recovery devices to desalination is in transition.
Previously dominated by Calder’s ERT pelton wheels, isobaric devices such as Calder’s DWEER and ERI’s PX Pressure Exchangers, are rapidly gaining favour. We collected this data for the 19th IDA Worldwide Desalting Plant Inventory, but in the end could not use it for technical reasons. It makes an interesting chart. Pump Engineering’s Turbo are undoubtedly the energy recovery device of choice for small units. ERI and DWEER are neck-and-neck for isobaric devices, although Calder has made its market share from fewer bigger units. Calder’s ERTs show no sign of losing popularity, with 581,000m3/d worth of orders in 2005 – more than twice the volume of any other technology in that year.
