Brazil’s new sanitation law set to boost investment

Tax breaks, concession rights and cheaper finance: John Kolodziejski gets to grips with the new legislation.

Brazil’s Congress passed the long-awaited law on basic sanitation (Lei de Saneamento Basico) on 12 December, which was subsequently ratified by President Lula da Silva on 5 January. The law had been debated for some 20 years, but its scenario-shifting impact was illustrated by the steep rise in water-related shares (Sabesp, Copasa and Sanepar).
