Gord Cope finds that it is not only environmental regulation that is driving the global mining industry’s growing need for water.

The mining industry, which forms approximately 1% of the global economy, is in a record-breaking cycle. According to the World Bank’s 2005 mining survey, global consumption of refined metals (aluminium, iron, nickel, zinc, copper and lead) has climbed from 50 million tonnes to 67 million tonnes, in the last decade.
