Ulster escapes charges – for now

The decision to delay the implementation of water charges in Northern Ireland means self-financing is as distant as ever.

Politicians in Northern Ireland used shared anxieties about water charges to help forge their last-minute peace deal on power-sharing on 26 March. Utility bills, ready to be mailed, have been delayed until the devolved administration meets later in the year. Water charges were one of the few areas on which the two parties instinctively agreed.
