* A wind turbine is planned as part of Thames Water’s £400 million investment programme to improve London’s major sewage works at Crossness.

The plant currently serves two million people, and generates much of its own electricity by burning sludge. The addition of a wind turbine should enable the plant to generate 50% of its total needs from green energy, according to Thames. Subject to planning approval, work will begin in early 2008 and will be completed within six years.
