Kathmandu contract draws its final breath

Severn Trent has walked away from negotiations for the Kathmandu management contract. After two decades of political infighting, a long-term solution to water supply in Nepal’s central valley is still nowhere in sight.

Nepal’s Melamchi Water Supply Project was dealt a fatal blow on 21 May, when Severn Trent Water International (STWI) announced that it had failed to conclude negotiations with the Nepalese government. The aim had been to secure a contract to assist in the development and management of a new publicly owned water utility for Kathmandu Valley.
