São Francisco river transfer moves forward

Following protracted local protests, the Brazilian army has been drafted in to kick-start an ambitious water transfer project. One hopes the private firms responsible for the technical work will not need military protection.

Initial work on the BRL6.3 billion (US$3.3 billion) São Francisco river transfer project began on 25 June, when Brazilian army construction battalions cleared riverside scrubland for the first channels.
