China puts environment first

The creation of a new environment ministry has raised the profile of water quality in China. It is a warning to those in breach of discharge regulations.
The People’s Republic of China has a new Ministry of Environmental Protection, which will be headed by Minister Zhou Shengxian.
The creation of the new body reflects a change in attitude towards the environment, and marks a shift in status for the government body responsible for water quality – previously known as the State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA).
