German communal water’s €87bn investment need

A new study argues that the investment backlog in German municipal infrastructure requires a front-loaded investment programme, with PPPs taking up some of the slack. Their application in the water sector remains unclear.

A new report suggests that a massive €704 billion will need to be spent on German municipal infrastructure between 2006 and 2020, of which water and wastewater will account for 4% and 8.3%, respectively.

Calculated in 2000 prices, this means that €29 billion will need to be spent on water infrastructure and €58.2 billion in the wastewater sector ...
