Full-scale Gulf reference nears for Bluewater Bio

Bahrain’s Ministry of Works has signed a letter of intent with Bluewater Bio to undertake a $19 million upgrade to the secondary treatment stage at the Tubli wastewater treatment plant.

Tubli, Bahrain’s largest WWTP, has experienced hydraulic overloading in recent years, receiving peak flows of 300,000m3/d against a design capacity of 230,000m3/d. Bluewater Bio will upgrade two aeration tanks with air diffusers, in order to implement its specialised HYBACS process which will treat 100,000m3/d of primary-treated effluent at the plant. The implementation phase is scheduled to be completed by the end of January 2011.

The MOW has also engaged consultant p2m berlin to advise on the implementation of other short-term measures to improve the performance of the secondary biological treatment phase.

HSBC is leading the separate advisory team that is drafting a proposal to spin off the Tubli plant, including an upgrade and expansion of the design capacity to 350,000m3/d.
