Maynilad takes action on wastewater capacity deficit

Maynilad Water Service announced this week that it is to build five new wastewater treatment plants in Quezon City, as part of an ongoing programme to improve the sanitation of communities within its Manila West Zone concession area along the San Juan River Basin.
They will form part of a network of 13 new wastewater treatment facilities and collector systems to be built with a combined capacity of 72,000m3/d, which will serve a total population of almost 600,000.
The first five will replace the existing communal septic tanks under the Quezon City Communal System, which serve some 6,000 households and businesses and date back to the 1950s. The project is expected to be completed in 2012.
Maynilad will use a combined sewerage system (CSS) to build a network of collector pipes and WWTPs that will treat wastewater before discharging it into the Pasig River and Manila Bay.
