Water for 1,000 villages
A flagship irrigation project of India's Telangana state is gaining momentum. Set to service three major districts, it will be key in alleviating acute water scarcity in the state.
One of the two pumping stations for the Bheema sub-project in Andrah Pradesh. ANDRITZ entered the Indian market for large irrigation pumps in 2007 and over the past 10 years excellent and highly valued large pump references have been established in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana states.
An accelerating pace
The Indian province of Telangana is experiencing a flurry of irrigation projects. Pressured by the demands of its sizeable rural population, the government has been pushing to accelerate multiple major water projects to alleviate water scarcity across the state. Now the Palamuru Rangareddy Lift Irrigation Scheme, which had been stuck in court case limbo, is seeing the last hurdles cleared and the pace of construction quicken.
The project aims to create an irrigation potential for about 40,468 km² (10,000,000 acres) of upland across the three districts of Mahbubnagar, Rangareddy, and Nalgonda. This project will also provide drinking water to all 1,131 villages in the vicinity, in addition to providing industrial water to these areas.
Over a 60 day period during the flooding season, the project will oversee the transfer of 3,398,021,591 m³ (120 billion ft3) of water in five stages from the Srisailam reservoir on the Krishna River, 240 m above sea level, up to the K.P. Laxmidevipally reservoir, which is at a height of 670 m. During the two month period, an impressive volume of about 56,633,693 m³ (2,000 TCM or 2 billion ft³) of water per day will be lifted up to higher altitudes.
As part of its on-going endeavor to create value for customers by offering smart solutions, ANDRITZ will be supplying equipment for this ambitious project.
ANDRITZ entered the Indian market for large irrigation pumps in 2007 and over the past 10 years, it has established excellent and highly valued large pump references in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana . This reputation, built up over the previous decade, formed part of the basis for the latest contract award. Palamuru not only demanded the largest pumps to be supplied in India so far, but it is also the first such project in the country where ANDRITZ is providing the complete electro-mechanical equipment.
Supporting the drive for water security
ANDRITZ’s scope of supply comprises 13 high capacity pumps, discharge valves, motors and excitation systems. The contract includes design, manufacturing, supply and supervision services for installation and commissioning of eight pump-motor sets for stage I and five sets for stage IV. The vertical Francis-type pumps have a rated capacity of 145 MW and will operate at a head of 112 m for stage I and 135 m for stage IV.
ANDRITZ won this large prestigious project under very stringent and competitive conditions and is proud to be associated with its development in the state of Telangana. The Palamuru Rangareddy Lift Irrigation Scheme firmly establishes the entry of the Austrian group into the high capacity pump sector in India.
